ORGANIC RESTAURANTS IN:

Burma/Myanmar

Burma is a diverse country with ethnic groups like Bamars and Chin contributing to different aspects of the culture and cuisine. China, Thailand, and India have also influenced Myanmar over the years. Seafood is common in coastal cities, and dried shrimp paste is consumed everywhere. Thoke salads are common, casual meals, and can feature one main ingredient like rice noodles, long bean, or potato. Kaffir lime and pickled tea leaves (lahpet) are typical flavorings, yet intriguing to Westerners. The noodle and fish soup called mohinga is essentially the national dish, and is often eaten for breakfast. Some of the more health-conscious options you may find include establishments serving vegetarian-oriented Chinese, Nepalese, Indian, and American food along with local dishes.

While in Burma, see the Kothaung Paya temple near the palace in Mrauk U. Many other temples around the country will catch your eye. Shwedagon Paya in Rangoon is not to be missed. Inle Lake and Ngapali Beach provide great relaxation. For some real natural beauty, visit Mt. Kyaiktiyo, a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists in Burma. If you want, you can even take a balloon ride over Bagan.
