10 GMO-Packed Foods to Avoid
When You Shop
One of the most difficult challenges shoppers face these days is keeping genetically modified organisms (GMOs) out of their baskets. Many food products contain them, and according to the Non-GMO Project, a nonprofit organization that is doing its utmost to make the public aware of the dangers of eating GMOs, these organisms are linked to various health problems. They also may be harmful for the environment.
In more than 60 countries worldwide, including the European Union, Australia and Japan, buying GMOs is restricted or even banned. So far, these products are still sold in the United States, but many Americans are unaware of their possible dangers.
Unfortunately, there is no law regarding labeling GMOs, which makes it very difficult to know when a food has been genetically modified. However, both the Non-GMO Project and another organization, called GMO Guard, have specific stamps of approval that they place on GMO-free foods.
Many consumers choose to buy imported items that are labeled GMO-free. Milk is one of the most controversial of these products because much of it contains antibiotics and hormones. GMO is present in the feed of many cows.
Healthy living website Naturally Savvy mentions a number of foods that are likely to contain GMOs. We have compiled a list of 10 of the most common:
1. Dairy Products
Milk, yogurt and cheese, unless they are labeled otherwise, could be made from cows that have been injected with a genetically modified hormone called “rBST,” which is given to them so that they produce lots of milk. The cows may also be fed genetically modified crops that include soy, canola and corn.
2. Meat
As mentioned before, meat may be labeled as free of hormones and antibiotics, but the animals were most likely fed with genetically modified feed.
3. Eggs
It’s very likely the chickens were fed GM feed.
4. Cereals
If the cereal is a grain cereal, it probably doesn’t contain GMOs. But many cereals do, especially those made for children, which often include sugar and corn starch. Be sure to read the list of ingredients carefully.
5. Frozen, Readily Prepared Meals
These are very likely to include GMOs such as corn, soy, whey protein and more.
6. Condiments
Unless they are specifically labeled as organic, products like soy, corn and canola contain GMOs.
7. Pasta, Rice and Beans
Be careful with these. All of them are fine unless you are buying ready-made meals, in which case they probably do contain GMOs.
8. Oils
While olive oil is GMO-free, certain vegetable oils, such as canola, corn and soybean oil, are not.
9. Bread
Commercially made bread usually contains corn syrup and other GMO ingredients.
10. Snacks, Chips and Cookies
These are often full of GMOs from corn syrup, canola oil and additives.
