Are GMOs Destroying
Your Children’s Health?

Studies and reports in the media have made parents very wary of feeding their children foods containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). These harmful substances are believed to be particularly dangerous if ingested by children, and unfortunately, they are so common that it is difficult to avoid them entirely. In fact, GMOs are present in many baby formulas.

So, what is a concerned parent supposed to do? According to an article featured in Natural Savvy, GMOs pose two main dangers to kids:

1. Developmental Issues

Kids are growing, and genetically modified food may have harmful effects on the development process.

2. Allergic Reactions

Children, especially infants, react to allergies far more often than adults do, which means they are more prone to react to whatever toxins are in GMOs. In addition, the amount of toxins that will cause a reaction is far less for children.

How Do Children Consume GMOs?

Children consume GMOs in the form of soy baby formula and corn cereals. They also drink lots of milk, which may contain both hormones and GMOs.

A study conducted by the Environmental Health Sciences Division at the University of Minnesota found that children face numerous potential health effects by consuming foods with GMOs. Researchers recommend feeding children healthy, organic foods instead.

Although it is challenging to shop without purchasing foods that contain GMOs, it may be even more difficult to avoid GMOs in restaurants. When you do dine out with kids, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

1. Avoid items that contain soy and corn such as tofu, grits, tamales, polenta, soy sauce, miso and tortillas. Unfortunately, the majority of these products contain GMOs.

2. Choose dishes that are made with olive oil such as Italian or Greek food. It’s likely that other restaurants will use vegetable oil to cook with, and this is usually canola, soybean, cottonseed or other genetically modified oil.

3. Order vegetarian meals, unless the restaurant serves organic meat.

4. Avoid fast-food outlets wherever possible. It is advised to eat at a local restaurant that is not part of a chain. You will be more likely to have healthier options.

5. Don’t order soda or diet drinks for the kids. Rather, choose water or freshly squeezed fruit juices.

It’s tough to develop a GMO-free diet for children, but purchasing organic food is a smart way to start. Even when you dine out, there are plenty of places that offer organic meals.
