Bulgaria
Bulgaria is a Southeastern European country bordered by Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, and Turkey. It has mountains, sea, and a well-preserved history. Thracians, Greeks, Romans, Ottomans, and other peoples have lived here in the past. The Bulgarian language is similar to Russian, and French is sometimes understood, particularly in the capital of Sofia.
Your visit should include a look at small villages, architectural and archaeological reserves, and museums. The Aleksandr Nevski Church in Sofia commemorates soldiers who died fighting for national independence in the 19th century. An impressive traditional Roman theater stands in Plovdiv. See Rilski Monastery in the forested mountains of the West, or the Tsarevets Fortress in medieval capital Veliko Târnovo. Mix art and comedy on an enjoyable tour of the Museum House of Humour and Satire in Gabrovo, or chill on the Black Sea beach of Varna.
What’s to eat? Have some refreshing tarator, a cold soup with the excellent local yogurt, cucumber, and sometimes walnuts or dill. You can also order items like pilaf, shopska salata with sirene cheese, stuffed zucchini or peppers, potato balls with sauce, or maybe a meshana skara (mixed grill). Bakeries and cafes serve up some good items like ancient grain breads, raw cakes, and vegan banitsa (pastries typically filled with cheese). Mediterranean organic food is commonly served, and you can usually find some organic produce and provisions.
