Cuba is a land of contradictions. It has beautiful scenery, friendly people, and vibrant music and dance, but it also has a legacy of communist repression and poverty. Those lucky enough to visit will enjoy walking around Havana looking at sites like the Plaza de Armas, the city’s oldest square, which contains the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales. It may seem at times like it’s still the 1950s in this city. The Gran Parque Natural Montemar contains incredible biodiversity. There are also great beaches and diving centers.

Cuban food blends Spanish, Caribbean, African, and native Taino influences. Rice and beans, also known as Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) are a staple. Avocado, root vegetables like yucca and malanga, and beef are also common foods. You can find salads with fermented green beans. The local bread is delicious. You can have it in a medianoche or other type of Cuban sandwich for a hearty lunch. Dig into a plate of mofongo, smashed plantains stuffed with chicken, pork, or fish. If you need a break from heavy, meaty foods, try some local organic food or vegan-friendly tapas. There is Asian food in Havana, and a few natural foods restaurants in Pinar del Rio and in Camaguey in the East.
